WHO WE ARE

Ballast is an architecture and interior design studio led by Travis Hauan and Adam Clements, built on the belief that good design should feel grounded, anchored by purpose, place, and the people who inhabit it.

We approach our work with equal parts curiosity and clarity.

At Ballast, we are drawn to the tactile and the timeless: natural materials, honest construction, and a quiet intentionality in design that does not shout but settles in. Every project is a conversation, shaped by people and context, guided by restraint, and resolved through craft.

Rooted in the landscapes and traditions of the Pacific Northwest, our work pares things down to what matters most: people and place. The result is architecture that is not only seen, but felt; spaces that hold, support, and inspire.

We would love to hear from you, whether you are ready to begin or simply want to learn more about what we do.

Travis Hauan

Travis is a true Northwest native, shaped by a lifetime of connection to the landscapes and communities of the Puget Sound. Growing up on Whidbey Island instilled a deep appreciation for the region’s natural beauty and craftsmanship. Years of travel broadened his perspective, but he ultimately returned to the rugged forests and shorelines of Kitsap County, where he now lives among the trees with his wife and children.

With an extensive background in commercial and institutional architecture, paired with hands-on experience in residential construction, Travis brings a rare versatility to his work. He has led projects ranging from high-end custom homes to large-scale public facilities, always with a focus on clarity, craft, and context.

Travis thrives in collaboration, whether it’s working closely with clients to uncover the heart of a design, or partnering with builders to translate ideas into tangible spaces. His goal is simple: to help turn big ideas into enduring architecture that feels deeply rooted in its place.

Adam Clements

Adam was born and raised in California and moved to Seattle in 2013 to attend graduate school at the University of Washington. Drawn to the Pacific Northwest’s vibrant culture and natural beauty, he and his wife decided to make Seattle home, where they are now raising four lively children in their busy, joy-filled neighborhood.

Adam’s work is rooted in a strong background in residential architecture, with extensive experience refining the details that make a home both beautiful and functional. He has a particular talent for optimizing small and challenging spaces, creating thoughtful solutions for the rhythms of urban life.

For Adam, design is a collaborative process. He enjoys building relationships with his clients and drawing inspiration from their sites, programs, and personalities. This approach ensures each project is not only well-crafted, but also deeply personal and meaningful.
